Hello! Aternos is a minecraft server hoster which has been operating since April 2013

Since then it has been providing their services for free to millions of players around the globe completely 100% free of charge. There isn’t even an option to pay for anything. Aternos is completely funded by ads.

Let’s Start!

So let’s begin setting up you first Aternos server. In this article we will go in depths of what can be done and HOW to do it.

First create an account or login if you already have. Then, you will see a big blue, “Create Server” button. Click on it and enter the details

Creating a server…
  • The “mrc2.aternos.me” is the IP and to which players will connect.
  • The second line is the “MOTD” which is a text that appears below the server name
  • Selecting “Java” means players will be able to join via a computer, while selecting “Bedrock” means players will be able to join via, mobile, consoles, Minecraft Windows 10 edition

After you have done that, you will be redirected to the dashboard. If you want to start your server, hit start and wait for the queue time to end. At the last minute, a confirm button will appear and you have to click on it or else you have to wait again.

Exploring the tabs

If you click the triple dashed button, you will see a number of options. I will explain them in a minute.

Server

This is the main tab where you can start the server and the one you are probably in right now.

Options

Here you can see a number of options you can change.

(only main ones listed below)

  • “SLOTS” is where you can set a limit on how many players can join
  • “PVP” is a setting where you can enable/disable fighting players.
  • “WHITELIST” is a setting where you can allow only select players to join
  • “CRACKED” – if you enable this, non-premium users can join
  • “COMMAND BLOCKS” is to whether or not to enable command blocks
  • “RESOURCE PACK URL” is where you can set a resource pack. Info on how to set it up HERE

Console

It’s a place where you can run commands and see what events (plugin/mods etc), what commands were run, in the server.

Typing out a command

Log

It’s similar to console but you cannot run commands in a log and the whole list of events is viewable in the log compared to console showing recent events. Log is useful if for example your server is having problems and you need to track down the problem

Players

Here you can see, people currently playing, list of operators, list of banned players, whitelisted people and also edit them.

Software

List of softwares…

Now, this is a vital part of running your server. You can see many different software names in front of you but which one to choose? Here are some popular softwares and what each can do.

Java

  • Vanilla is just normal Minecraft without any mods or plugins
  • Paper/Bukkit is a software to run plugins that is based on “Spigot/Bukkit” and more optimized (recommended)
  • Forge/Fabric are popular software used to run mods
  • Snapshots are basically upcoming beta versions of minecraft and may be buggy
  • Spigot/Bukkit is the same as “Paper” but less optimized
  • Magma is used to run both mods and plugins.
  • Glowstone is used for running plugins too but the latest version you can get is 1.12

Bedrock

  • Bedrock is the default version of Minecraft without any modifications
  • PocketMine is used for Bedrock servers and is used to run plugins.

Plugins

If you selected any other option other than vanilla, you will have a “Plugins” or a “Mods” tab depending on the software you selected. To install one, search for the one you want and click install button. That’s it. Done

Files

Here, you can edit the world files/delete plugins or configuration files or upload particular files where it’s required. It’s just like a File Manager.

Worlds

In this tab you can see all the worlds you have in the server, download/upload a world, delete a world and generate a new one.

Backups

You can connect your Google account and create backups

There’s also an option to enable/disable automatic backups and the rate

Access

If you want someone else to have access to you server, and they have a Aternos account, you can do so here and select what they are allowed to access

That’s all the tabs and options you have got. Here are some recommendations:

  • Do not spawn in lots and lots of mobs all at once
  • Do not use lots of TNT
  • Have a reasonable amount of plugins/mods, not over 30 preferably (if 4/5 players)
  • Don’t use old or legacy plugins/mods

Also, DO NOT try to keep your server 24/7 or use afk farms. It WILL get your server deleted!!
